STATEMENT BY DR. FINDLAY. ißy Toloj:raph.--Pres3 Association.! Christcliurch, January 24. The Attorney-General, Dr. I'indlay, arrived from Wellington ami went on to Duncdin to-day. He told a reporter that- the caso of Inspector Gillies had been considered by Cabinet, and that it had been decided that the retirement must stand. .' A Prison Board would bo appointed shortly, consisting -of. one lay member from each of the four centres and three official members, including a Judge of tho Supremo Court. New polico regulations have been drafted and aro now being reviewed by the Crown law officers. They will bo submitted to the polico inspectors in due course. ; Promotions consequent on the retirement of high officers in the polico forco aro not likely to be announced for a month or two. Dr. Findlay, who arrived here to-day, will receive a deputation to-morrow regarding tho retirement of Inspector O'Brien from the polico force. ;Ho"wilI return to the north on Thursday. .
