ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
RACE TRAFFIC ON HUTT ROAD. A SERIOUS SMASH. . On Monday-night, while tho heavy vehicle traffic was returning from .the Trentham racecourse a serious accident took place in the vicinity of Mason's Gardens, Taita. It appears that a buggy' driven by Mr. Oiliver and containing-Mrs. l'etcrs, Mrs. Cudby, Ina Cudby, and Mr. Aston made an attempt to pass another vehicle which was.."preceding it. At the time a motor-carj owned by Mrs. Jacob Joseph', came from behind, and the chauffeur apparently endeavoured to pass tho' buggy. The road at tho spot is narrow,, and. a collision took place The buggy was turned right over, throwing tho occupants violently to the ground. Ina Cudby, a littlo.girl of tlireo or four years, sustained a broken thigh,-Mrs.. Peters was badly bruised and cut, while Mr. Oiliver also sustained injuries.. The occupajits of the car, Mr. F. G.' Nathan, Mrs. Nathan, and another lady,, fortunately escapc'd with-, out injury. . V
... Dr.. Sliand,, .of Wellington,- who .was. passing .in ljis car "at the time, of. tho. 'accident,' rendered what, aid ,was-pos-sible at tho time, and, with Mr'. Bradley, conveyed tho sufferers . to their homes, where Dr. Hector was icallcd in. Both the buggy and car woro considerablv damaged. The littlo girl, Ina Cudby, is progressing, favourably: STRUCK BY A BOX OF BUTTER. During transhipping operations yesterday -from tho Corinna to tho lonic,a box of butter slipped out of a sling, and fell back into tho. hold. Two men, named- T. -Pressleyv and ' F. C. Gibson, were struck on the head' bv tho box, and jthey sustained severo scalp wounds. Both' were taken to the hospital, but after their wounds had been dressed they wore able to leave for their own homes. A" BATHER'S DEATH. (By Telegrapk—Press' Association.) ' " '.' , Napier, January 24.. • An inquest was held to-dav on tho body of i?atnuel Munties Clapham, who bis death ..while bathing on the 'Marine Parade beach on Monday afternoon. Tho. medical evidenco was to the cffcct that the primary cause ofdeath was heart- failure, owing to shock in finding liimself in' trouble -in. the water, asjiejiad not been in.tho water long enough to drown. A verdict wasreturned.tliat death resulted from heart' failure. ■ SUDDEN DEATH. • i Reofton, January 24. An old man uamed John Dellow Lon", connected with-tho Buller punt, fell, ill at Inangalnia Junction, and died wlii'e being conveyed to Reefton'. Deceased was said to be tho first male child born in the Nelson province.
