MR. BARCLAY HECTOR APPOINTED. • .(By Telegraph—Press Association.) , Chrlstchuroh, January 24. The New Zealand University Senate took in committee this afternoon tha question of the-election of a registrar, in succession to Mr. J. W. Joynt, who resigned last year. There were ninecandidates for the position, and the system of balloting adopted was to pair the men and vote oh each pair, tho scheme working out similar to a tennis tournament draw. Several ballots were, taken, and finally it was announced that Mr. Barclay Hector, Assistant Regis- . trar, who has been Acting-Registrar . since Mr. Joynt resigned, had been * elected to the position. Mr. Hector*' who is-a son of the late Sir James Hector, has been connected with the University for sixteen years past; In February, 1899, he was'appointed assist- ■ ant to Mr. J. W. Joynt, Registrar; and at' the Senate meeting of 1904 he was appointed Assistant Registrar. At the same time Mr. Joynt was granted sis months leave of absence, and Mr. Hoc*; tor was appointed Acting-Registrar for that period. . '.At the special meeting,, of the Senate of April; 1910, Mr. 'Joynt tendered his resignation, and Mr. Heo tor has. been the Acting 7 Registrar ever since. On many occasions he had acted as Registrar for periods varying from three weeks to two- months, and, all told, he has actually carried on the business of the University almost single. handed for - very nearly- two completf years.
