His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) will arrive in Auckland next Sunday, and on Monday evening will preside over, a dinner at the Grand Hotel, to bo tendered to the Australian milling engineers who will be visiting that city in connection with tho,annual conference of the institute. His Excellency will accompany the party -to the Thames, where the business of tho conference will be transacted.
The Prime Minister and all members of the Ministry, with the exception of the Hon. Dr. Eindlay, and the Hon. A. T. Ngata, will be in town to-day.
This evening the Prime Minister and his colleagues will entertain the Hon. G. Fowlds, who has recently returned from representing the Dominion at the South African Commonwealth celebrations. A dinner will be held in Bellamys. Colonel and Mrs. Moore, of England, who have been camping at Taupa, are in town for the races. They return to Taupo towards the end of the week. Mr. M. Myers, of the legal firm, of Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers, and Mrs. Myers, are to leave on a trip to the Old Country by the White Star liner lonic to-morrow. The trip, in which Mr. Myers will combine business with pleasure, and extend over Coronation time at Home. Mr. and Mrs. William Walpole, of Feilding, and their two daughters, leave on a trip to England by the Arawa in April, - Mr.' and Mrs. Geo. Winder left by the Mararoa last evening on a visit to the Cold Lakes. Mr. and Mrs'. W. Corber and Miss Solomons, of Java, who have completed a toUr of Now Zealand, sail for London by the lonic to-morrow. Mrs. S. M'Laren, Misses M. and H. M'Laren, . and Mr. H. M. M'Laren, of Carterton, are proceeding on a trip to England by. the lonic, sailing to-mor-row. The visiting Canterbury cricketers yesterday invited Mr. J. C. Cusack, the popular secretary of the Wellington Wednesday Cricket Association, to lunch with them, and seized the opportunity to. present him with a handsome gold badge as a recognition of his endeavours on their behalf. At the samo gathering the Canterbury cricketers presented their manager, Mr. C. Bascand, with a silver-mounted walking stick and 'silver matchbox The presentations, were made by Mr. George, captain of the senior visiting eleven. Each gift bears the initials of the recipient and the furthor inscription: "From the C.T.C.A., 1911." The Rev. Father Carey, of St. Mary's, West Melbourne, and the Rev. Father Murphy, of Northcoto, Melbourne, arrived in Auckland on Monday by the Victoria from Sydney.
The Rev. A. A. Watson, who for two years has been the successful and popular minister, of tho Primitive Methodist Church at AVaihi, has tendered his resignation, in order to occupy himself with other work. On January 15 valedictory services were held, large congregations being present.
The Right Rev. A. W. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Waiapu, will pay a short visit to Auckland nest month. .He will arrive on the morning of ,the 9th by the 'Main Trunk express, and in the afternoon willatend a meeting of the governors of St. John's College. The Bishop will hold a confirmation service at St. Alban's Church, Mount Eden, on the'evening of the following day, and on the 11th will proceed to Huntly and Hamilton, returning to Auckland on tho 13tll. ;
Bishop Neligan, formerly of Auckland, hasubeeniobliged/on-the advice of 'his-.;medical-atfen'dants,. to.decline the invitation from the Bishop of Manchester to undertake tho work of mifsioncr in that diocese. Since, reaching England. Dr. Neligan has been staying in Devon, where ho has taken a house for the winter.
In . connection with the extensive "field" changes of the. Salvation Army in the North Island, the following transfers are being made: —Adjutant Marshall, from Dannevirke to Petone; Adjutant Green, from Petone to Dannevirke; Adjutant Dorkins, from Newton (Auckland) to Wanganui; Adjutant Wellington, from New Plymouth to Newton (Auckland); Adjutant Armstrong, from Whangarei to Cambridge; Adjutant Styles, from Hamilton to Hawera; Ensign Andrews, from Napier to Thames; Ensign Gibb, from Thames to Devonport; Ensign Hultquist,' from Dovonport to Feilding; Ensign Avenel, from Feilding to Masterton. 'Mr. J. Petrie, editor of the "Greymouth Evening Star," is at present on a short visit to Wellington. Mr. A. H. Holmes, Clerk of the Magistrate's Court, has returned from 3 month's holiday spen£ in Wairakei. The funeral of the late Mr. J. W. Fletcher took place yesterday afternoon at the Karori cemetery. Included in the cortege were a number of deceased's relatives and friends. The chief mourners were: Miss S. A. Fletcher, Mesdames J. W. Black, A. de Castro, C. Ralph, J. BuddleT E. 'Bowmar, and W. H. Nowbery (daughters), and Messrs. D.. - Fletcher, E. Fletcher, and. J.. W. Fletcher (sons). The'service was conducted by the Rev. S. J. Serpel. Mr.. Edward Newman, M.P. (Manawatu) is visiting Wellington on business connected with his constituency. The latest English papers announce that Sir William Ramsay, one of the greatest modern authorities on the life of St. Paul and the «arly history of Christianity, has announced his intention to retire from the Chair -of Humanity in the University of Aberdeen. Ho has completed 25 years' service as Professor of Humanity. Reasons of health have influenced his decision, and he also desires greater leisure to prosecute research work.
