PETONE AFFAIRS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINC. The Petoiie Borough Council met last evening. There were present the Mayor (Jlr. J. \V. M'Ewan) and Councillors Harding, Brocklcbauk, Piper, List, Jones, Trueman, Short, Southgatc. The Department of Public Health notified that tho responsibility o£ controlling infectious diseases now devolved on the Hospital Boards. It was suggested that until the Hospital Board should hove provided the necessary machinery to give effect to amendments in the law, tho council should continue to act as at present with regard to any infectious diseases that might occur in its district. Ihe District Health Officer would approach the Hospital Board for the district with a view to relieving tho council of this responsibility as soon as possible. ' ' . "That means that matters remain just they are?" asked. Councillor Piper. For a time,'' replied the Mayor. Councillor Piper complained that in its policy witlrregard to Hospital Boards the government was withdrawing control nli 1 e oca l authorities. The letter was received. Ihe engineer notified that the eastern draining pumping nlant was nearly completed, and it was contemplated that trials would be undertaken next week, with' a view to handing over the plant. The engineer recommended that owners of property be notified to make connections, within a given time, to the-sewers. It was decided that notice be given as recommended by the engineer, thirty days atter tho taking over of tho plant W the council. • St. David's • Football Club applied for the use of a football ground on the Recreation Ground for the forthcoming season. The State Guaranteed Advances Office notified that an instalment (interest and principal) of ,£159 13s. The Hutt River Board intimated that it w;ou!d accept the sum of .£4OO offered •by the council-for the land'required on uear Island for bridge approach purunder the following conditions:—(l) i Hat the grade of the embankment forma'ng' the - approach"from tho eastern' S'"do of the closed western branch of the river, to the present end of the westerh section the bridge shall be .tho same as that of the western scction of tho bridge.
