THE USAGE OF ANIMALS.
. S.P.C.A. MEETING. . .Miv J. Jameson presided at a meeting or the Society for the Prevention oi Lruclty to Animals, held in tho Chamiberof Commerce last evening. During'the meeting a letter was read rrom one who signed himself "A Lover of Animals," calling attention to tho condition of an animal drawjng a vchiclo which was usually in attendance on-the Auckland train. The writer stated that the horse was apparently starving, and so weak that it tfould hardly draw tho vehicle. The inspector remarked that the statements in the..letter were true. Tho owner had been warned, and had turned tho animal out. It would bo six. months before it would be fit to work. The inspector reported that ho had inspected the saleyards. at Johnsonville, and had found that sonie of the yards bad troughs supplied with water, whilst others wero without troughs or water. He had been informed that tho cattle were not left long in the yards. "The owner told me ho was ashamed of him when he bought it," said the inspector, in reporting on a horse which had fallen by the way, and had severely injured bis. knees. The owner said that ho had given £10 for the horse, and a set of harness. It was so bad that he (the owner) on his own initiative, had had tho animal destroyed. A report had been forwarded to the secretary that a number of pigs had been seen on the railway line at Ngahariranga, nigs which had died on the trucks, and had ,been thrown out preparatory to being carted away. Tho inspector said that he had made inquiries at tho railway station, and elsewhere, respecting tho cause, of death, but had been afforded no information on the subject. It was decided to hold tho annual meeting of the sobiety o'n Tuesday next, at 4 p.m:, in-the Chamber of Commerce.
