MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Masterton, January 11. A representative of tho Taranaki Oil Company is at present in Masterton. Ho expresses tho opinion that tliero is a great future for the oil industry on both coasts of the North Island. A sports gathering is to be held on the Langdale Domain on Thursday next. Tho' amount sued for in tho Magistrate's' Court at Masterton during the quarter ending December 31 was JCIGBS lis. 7d. 1 Tho amount recovered was ,£B4B Is. 9d. On the criminal side, fifty males and nine females were summoned or arrested. Ten males wero discharged, aild two committed for trial; twenty-nine males/and soven females were summarily convicted; and nineteen males and one i'emalo were lined.
Several metalling contracts in ; th6 .Masterton County havo been delayed ill conset[uence of the difficiilty experienced ill procuring suitable labour.. The announcement of tho resignation of Councillor Pauling from the Borough Council has been received with great regret. It is anticipated' that several other leading councillors will havo to consider their position under the new Act.
Councillor F. W. Templo has signified his intention of bringing before a future mooting of the Borough Council tho question of. raising a loan with which to wipo out the council's overdraft. The overdraft now stands at over 4*5000.
A start has been hiado by the new contractor with the'work of erecting tho two new bridges at the northern approach to Masterton.
Mr. 'A. W. Ho"g, M.F., intends giving a post-sessional'address in Masterton next week.
! Very complete arrangements have been made for tho Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis. Championships,..which are to be played on the Masterton courts on January 21,; 23, and 2i. Amongst thoso who have signified their intention of competing ill the tournament are: Messrs. J. C. I'eacock, F. M. B. .Fisher, H. A. Parker, C. C.. Cox, Ollivier, G. G. Aitken, H. Jt. Gore, H. W. Brown, and Bonniugton, and Misses Travel's, Nunneley, Wellwood, and Simpson. Tho Featherston County Council, with tlie assistance of the Government, .'local bodies, and motorists, intends bridging what.is known as Abbot's Creek, on tho Rimutaka'Hoad. An appeal has been made to the Masterton . County. Council for financial assistance; but this body, is nverso to acknowledging any liability, for the maintenance .of distant roads , and bridges,. and has declined. • A number of works in the Masterton County aro at present. being performed by day labour,'instead of by contract. ltabbits aro reported to have increased considerably in the Wairarapa district during the rscent summer months. The iveather conditions liavo been entirly favourable for this. Settlers arc now adopting vigorous measures for the extermination of the pest. During tho past quarter, twenty-seven applications for old age pensions' have been granted ill Masterton.
