The returns of /the Timaru Harbouf Hoard lor the past year show that the reveniio was £29,618, about ifluoU more than the previous year, and a record. _ The harbour.-rate - collected added • £8203. Imports- -were- 84 786' tons, au increase of 6300 tons; exports 57,536 tons, being 7000 tons less than the year before, chiefly duo to the' very small shipment-of oats, frozen meat totalled 804,000 carcasses; wool 41,130_ bales—a record. Tlio rating valuation of the harbour district has increased by £180,000,'t0 £10,500,000.
A SAD CASE. Ghristchurch, January 6. Henry Buiming, 61 years of age, for* merly employed by the Christchurch City Council, died in the hospital late last night. The circumstances attending his, admission to the institution are somewhat painful. Bunning, who occupied a small cottage in a lane off Madras Street, was on January 4 found lying in ,his yard, apparently very ill, by two neighbours. They informed the police, and tho man -was removed to the hospital. Ho was found to be suffering from;appendicitis, and peritonitis set in, causing his death. Bunning lived alone, and it is possible that had he sought assistance a day or two earlierhis life would have been saved.
BONUS FOR OIL PRODUCTION. New Plymouth, January 6. The directors of the Taranaki Petro. leum Company to-night passed a resolution to advise the Government that it is their intention to put in a claim, under the terms of the amended offer of the bonus for the production of crude petroleum, for £2500, the first instalment of- the bonus -in respect of 250,000 gallons, from tho bores at Moturoa.
A COUNCILLOR'S RESIGNATION. • Christchurcli, January 6. Councillor T. X. Horsley has resigned his seat on tho Christchurch City Council as one of the representatives of the Linwood Ward, having come under the operation of tho new provision in tho Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Act passed last session.
SHIP.'S "DRIFTWOOD." Christchurch, January 6. Another defaulting fireman was beford the Court at Lyttelton to-day, , and was sentenced to a week's imprisonment. In this case 1 the man had signed on the Delphic as from January. 4, and had gone aboard on January.s,[about an: hour before the departure of the vessel for Wellington, when the captain had ordered his arrest. ' '
CRIME FIGURES. Christchurch, January 6. The quarterly returns of the Christ* church Magistrate's Court show that in the yearly period, ended December -31, 994 males and 112 females were arrested, and 118 males and 11 females were discharged for want of evidence, 23 cases were, dismissed, 20 prisoners were committed for trial, 836 males and 98 females were summarily convicted, The fines , imposed totalled £7083 95., anij court fees amounted to £95..

He contradicted the statement that the Bank of New Zealand had noopportunity to tender for the loan. Mr. 'Lysnar claimed that ho : had saved £30,000 for the borough by going Homo' to raise the loan. '
AN ACT BY BREWERS. • Ashburton, January 6. 'A' nuriber of' Ashburton resident® complain of harsh treatment by Christchurch brewers, ivho in response to orders for small quantities of Christmas beerj returned the residents their money with orders unfilled. One, resident told a "Guardian" representative that he has been a customer, of the., brewery in Christchu'rch for .many years, but his order and money were returned at a time when there was ho other means of obtaining his holidAj. beer. - Therefore he had to go without.'
SOUTH ISLAND CAMP. Christchurch, January 6." The South Waimakariri River Board has virtually agreed to transfer a'4ooo- - reserve near Chris'tchurch to the Government for the South Island train-, ing camp, taking in exchange-extensive runs in the back country.
