ATTACKED THE FOREIGN DEVILS.
Seriou? rioting followed the outbreak of bubonic, plague in Shanghai at the beginning of last month. Stories were spread that the health'officers were taking sufferers to the ships to get their eyes and hearts for the compounding of medicine: and the health officers were assaulted. Rioting followed; and the Shanghai Volunteer Corps was'called out to protect foreigners and properly. The recent outbreak against foreigners in Ivwangtung was fomented by antidynastic followers. Insurgents from Hungan aided, and it • was not until 800 troops were sent that the uprising was suppressed. Churches and property were destroyed in - Leinchow and Sauchang, but no foreigners lost their lives.
