CHAMPAGNE FRAUDS.
INDIGNATION IN FRANCE. The agitation in the French wine-grow-ing district of Champagne against the fraudulent description of. wine from other districts as champagne is becoming more acute. An angry body • of "vignerons" have held a demonstration at, Epernay to demand that measures be. taken by the Government to prevent the importation of wine grown in other districts, to be .subsequently labelled and sold as tho produce of Champagne. Since then- the agitation has spread throughout the Marne Valley, especially in those districts where the cheaper qualities of wine are produced, and has.culminated in the suggestion of a general strike against taxes. The other day a consignment of forty casks of wine from Tpuraiaa reached the station of Damery, consigned to a dealer suspected of fraudulent practices. Soon a .crowd numbering 1500 invaded the station, protesting that the "vin do fraude" should not be delivered. They had already broached four casks ■ and had broken tho windows of the offending consignees before, the sub-prefect and the officials of tljeir own federation could induco them to desist from further violence by the promise that the remaining casks should be detained.
