YEAR'S SHIPPING RETURNS.
A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. - The following is a table showing ,tho shipping return for - the port of ■ Wellington for tho year ended -.December 31. In comparison with the previous year, -which is also given, it will bo seen that there is ' a substantial increase,ail round. For instance, the increase in the tonnage of the' foreign and coastal steamers which entered tho nort is 171.7G0 ton?, r.nd for sail CS3-J toils, while the number of men employed ds'crews has increased bjr. 1512 niul 101 for steam and sail respectively. Taking the figures representing th.-> tonnage of. the : various ■ vessels that cleared outwards for both years, it is found that the steam vessels' lonnago i-cyresonls tin increase of 130.918-ton's,, end an increase of 2031 men, while the.sailing -vessels arc responsible for e.n increase ef 2075 tons and 107 men on the preceding year'-; working.
