Nominations for tho Foxton Racing Club's meeting close at 9 o'clock tonight with tho club's secretary, Mr. u. Gray. • At Tauherinikau on Monday, Full Rate, who had tho steadier of lOst. 121b., was very unfortunate to miss the open sprint Cvent, won bv Merry Frank, by the shortest of heads. At the start lie was bounding in bis-usual manner, but, oa landing, bo wont down on his noso. Even with this handicap, he was out first, and it can readily be estimated how far he would have been ahead .had this mishap not occurred. The light-weight apprentice, C. Emerson, went south last night, after a successful season at Ellerslie. . Acrostic broke down badly -at the Tauherinikau meeting, and is not likely to raco again for somo time. It is said that his new owner/is desirous of parting with him. ! Nominations for tho Pahiatua Racing Club's meeting closa on Tuesday next, January 10. . ! At the Tauherinikau meeting, S. Reid was engaged to ride Warsong in tho two and three-year-old handicap on the second day. He walked a sweat to roduco his weight, but, when he arrived _at the racecourse ho was too late to weigh out, the result being that the stewards., fined him two pounds. - A. Oliver has been engaged to-, ride Los Angeles in'tho Wellington .Cub.- The big chestnut horse was backed for this dvent prior to the appearanco of tho weights"- - Melton, who won the Derby and St. Leger in- 1885, and - subsequently became a very successful sire, died at tho Wes-. terham Hill Stud recently. Foaled in 1882 he was -thus -28 years of age. Ho - was tlio siro of tho Auckland horsw ■'Seaton v.Delavel (sire of Gladsome and many'other good performers). It is rumoured that Mr. G. D. Greenwood wasj-.finxious tQ..buy.'.Doorcst! at tho Ellerslio' meeting, but Mr. J. Buckley was disposed to treat for the filly's 'purchased #' While at Bulls' on Monday. Mr." " H. iM'Manawuy. presented Mr. W.' Homes .with- Mahutii, for tho remainder ,of tho horse's racing career. The services of the light-weight,. J. M'Lcan, are much in demand at present. M'Lean was apprenticed -to C. O'Neill," tho Foxton trainer, but may bo transferred to George Price's stable. ' At. tho last' meeting of the Woodvillo District Jockey Club, Notorious, owned by. Mrs. E. Robertson, of TToxton, broke a leg and had to be destroyed. Tho club forwarded'a letter to Mrs. Robinson expressing regret at the accident, and .enclosed a "cheque for the nomination, and acceptance fees. Tho 'horse was buried freo of charge. Not _ many clubs would have acted in a similar manner. ' Notwithstanding tho fact that ho has been allotted considerably more than-weight-for-age, Danube appears to be easily -the best-treated candidate in the Wellington Cup Handicap, and, if he goes to tho post fit and well this month, he promises-to start a strong favourite. Danube's • stable-mate, Miss Mischief, is also engaged -in the Cup, and beforo backing the three-yccr-old. backers would nrpbably liko to knew a little more about his chances of starting, .for there aro other good races .in • which he could competa 'later in the such as the Great Autumn Handicap, at Riccarton. During the present season he has not suffered defeat, and his five victories have been achieved in very handsome manner. RACING FIXTURES. Jan. 21, 23,'25— Wellington R.C. Summer.
