THE FUNNEL-LESS SHIP.
WHAT IT MEANS IP SHE COMES.; '. Those who keep an intelligent eyo on the British Navy have probably suspected for. some time that the day of the J)readuought was not going to bo a very long one.' There is a type coming apparentiy which will make her obsolete. This is the funnel-less ship of about 5000 to 8000 tons, with a Hush deck fore, and aft, and a single turret mounting three guns. The current number of the Navy League journal has something to say of tho coming ship.; It states: "There seems to be something like agreement amongst the marine, engineers both at Homo and abroad, that the ship driven by internal combustion engine's aid having no funnels is likely ultimately to be with us. Some think within five years, others seven, and somo ten years 01" more. As is now well known, Messrs. Blohni and Voss afe building at Hamburg a vessel for the Hamburg-American line,, which will have two heavy 6il engines, with au aggregate forca of 3000 i.h.p. They are building another vessel, of which the ownership is not revealed, reported to be of greater power. Thero can be no doubt that this is intended for the German Navy Department, which is thus about to give the new means of propulsion a practical ' trial in a vessel designed for tho purpose." What the "Journal, - ' lmwevcv, fails to seo is that all.such changes are not good for Britain. When such a radically new typo of ship conies, all nations may start building on tho same footing, and pre- : vious superiority. in tonnage and con- i struction goes for little.
