THE LATE COL, SOMMERVILLE.

MILITARY FUNERAL. ' (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! Wanganui, December 25: The funeral of the late Colonel J. E. Sommervillo took place at St. John's Church, Matarawa, on. Sunday morning. Owing to the early hour and the. fact that so many were away from home on account of the holidays, there were not so many present as would have been the case under ordinary conditions, but, notwithstanding this, there was still a very large crowd from all over the district to testify to the' esteem in which the deceased gentleman was "held. The funeral was a military one, and, in addition to the Territorials, large numbers of ex-Contingenters, old Voluntqers, representatives of local bediei, old settlers, and the general public were present. The officiating clergy were the Yen. Archdeacon Jacob (chaplain to the forces), the Eev. ~\Y. G. Williams (vicar of St. John's, Matarawa), and.Mr. E. M. Menzies, lay-reader. After the service the proceedings, which, throughout, were very solemn and impressive, were brought to a close by the firing of the usual three vollevs and the sounding 1 of the "Last Post.""
