Port's subject was. the lifo of Dr, Griffith John who was born in Swansea, .Wales; ..-in 1831, , and would reach' his 79th birthday on Wednesday next; At an early , , age he went'to China Sr, re v h - e la »°" r for over 50 years.. What he accomplished was shown by the fact that, in .1905, there were 8000 church members.at Haugcbow, and ■ besides that hospitals, schools, etc.; had been started in different parts of China. Tho first five years of his 'ministry was spent ir Shanghai, but at, the of .that period he commenced pioneering work in the interior. In , China nearly every town was accessible by water as artificial canals had' baen made all over tho countrv Mr. Port went on to- say that Dr. Gri'ffith John found-opium trading to be the greatest curse in, China, and that ho noted with pleasure that th« English Government • were endeavouring to stop tho export of opium from India to China The. name of Dr. Griffith John would ever be remembered for his work would' live forever. .■■'■--.
