-4 . (By Telegraph.-Speciai Corresrondont.) Palmerston North, December 8. The Palmerston Amateur Athletic Club field the first of this season's evenin" meetings on the sports ground last evening, when there was a lair attendance of tho public. Three events were run. The 100 yds. handicap, in which there were two heats, resulted as follow:—. Noxon, Byds., 1; TValden, syds., 2; Horn, 11yds., 3. The half-mile handicap, open to pupils of tho High and Technical Schools, was won by Young (High School),, who received a start of 20vds. The Amateur Club's half-mile handicap was won by D. Park, after a great finish with Primrose. The National Sweet Pea Society .held its first annual meeting fast night.' The statement submitted by tho secretary, .Mr. E. xV. Osmond, showed that the society would about make both ■' ends meet after the present show, and they would have ,£125 worth of trophies to start tho current year with. The .following officers were elected:—President, Mr. J. GoringJohnston (Palmerston North); vice-presidents, Dr. Carberry (Stratford), and Mr. H. A. Fox (Wellington) ; committee, Messrs, Plummcv (Auckland), C. Goodson (Hawera), G. Murdoch (Napier), A. C. Brndfield (Palmerston North), G.' C. Holder (Porirua), F. Mason (Palmerston North), G. TV. Sellar,(Maslerton), C. Trevethick (Lower Hutt), P. TV .Goldsmith (Levin), G. TV. Keeling (Palmerston North); auditor, Mr. -C. F; Spoorier. Tho appointment of a secretary was left to the committee. Mr. Osmon declining re-election. The same schedule, as that which had been used at the present show was adopted, except that tho single hunch classes were struck out, and a class for novelties grown in New Zealand from colonial seed was inserted. . Considerable discussion took place on tho question as to where the next show should be held, and it was finally decided to hold it af Palmerston Jiiorth. A successful sale of work was opened by the Mayor last night in aid of the fund's of the Congregational Church. There was a large attendance of the public. An excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was rendered during the evening. There were also a number of competitions. The Governor attended the Sweet Pea Show here; yesterday afternoon, and expressed himself as boiiyr. greatly pleased with tho splendid exhibition.. Ho regretted that prior engagements prevented him opening the show, as requested, but he hoped to have that honour next year. His Excellency also complimented the officials on their ■ arrangements, and wished the society continued success. Mrs. R. Essex has handed to the treasurer of the proposed Old Men's Home Unrnl a cheque for .£l2B, being amounts which she had collected, in sums varvin" from ss. to ,£lO 10s. *
