Mr. Kaihau, M.P. foi the Western Maori district, had been. strongly urging that a _ clause . should be inserted in . tlio Native "WashingUp" Bill.- Whilst the Native Minister was 'replying, Mr. Glover, M.P. foe Auckland Cenfral, interjected: "Mr. Chairman." From all sides there waa a cry of "Order." "Never mind about ' order," rejoined Mr. Glover, 'but on . second thoughts he resumed his seat. : Subsequently Mr. Glover explained that he had tho interests of Mr.' Kaihau greatly, at heart. Ho thought that as Mr. Kaihau did not understand Eng-r . lisli, the reply of tho Native Minister should be interpreted to him sentence by sentence. Whilst he was proceeding, Mr. Glover was interrupted by Mr. Kaihau, who, in Splendid English, re- ' marked: "I understand him." Mr. Glover (to the Chairman): I: don't think Mr. Kaihau understands English. Mr. Kaihau: I.understand more thaa you did. (Laughter.) Mr. Chairman (to Mr. Glover): Hs says he understands. ' , ■ • Mr. Kaihau: Yes. Tho clauso was, however, rejected an overwhelming majority.
