HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Hutt b Borough Council was held last evening. \ Tlioso present were: The Mayor (Mr. E. ; P. Buuny), and Councillors Baldwin, 1 Barlow, Hayes, Pearce, Anson, Clere, and i Hawthorn. ; A letter was received from tho Petone t Borough Engineer, referring to the unevenuess of the gas supply, and asking the council to allow an examination of tho station meter to be made. Tho writer further stated- that, in order to do this, it would be necessary to by-pass the gas for some hours, and he suggested a basis for tho payment of gas' during the time of the by-pass. Tho Town, Clerk (Mr. Purser) reported that he and the borough engineer (Mr. Roache) had held a consultation, and had agreed to allow this to bo done. Professor von Zedlitz, referring to existing sanitary arrangements' on his premises, pointed out that ho .understood that they were quite satisfactoryi and therefore asked for exemption from the council's notice to connect with the sewerage system. It was. resolved to instruct tho engineer to confer with Professor von Zedlitz, and report at next council meeting. ' It was resolved, in the matter of certain sanitary arrangements (Mrs. Ellen Baker's property), to instruct the engineer to inform Mr. Baker that he would have to connect with the council's drain. _ In reference to proposed surface drainage to tho Everest's Creek culvert and to tho estimated cost of connections, Mr. A. Ballinger offered to pay .-£3 for. one connection, or in tho alternative suggested that, the council might effect two for £o. It was decided to put in the drain, provided that the applicant' defray the cost, which wus not to exceed £0. Tho council agreed to accept the Hutt Park Committee's offer of £5 75., as a complete settlement of rates due. Mr. Policy (Normandale) drew the council's attention to what he termed "a death trap" in the road.—Referred to the engineer. Mr. Gwilliam waited on the council to. further complain about a neighbour 'who had been instructed by the council's inspector to remove a fowl-yard in the vicinity of his property. Councillor Hawthorn moved that Councillors Anson, Baldwin, Dr. Purdy, and the mover ho ■ appointed to make inquiries into this matter.—Carried. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided to call for tenders for the supply of cement, and on the recommendation of tho engineer the Mayor moved that extras amounting to .£IOO 10s. be granted to. the ' eastern drainage contractor (Mr._ Young). Dr. Purdy, reporting on the railway septic tank," stated that it would be advisable to have the tank thoroughly cleaned out. It was resolved to forward the report to the railway authorities. -' The engineer reported that the cost .of the Rileymont Dedication, now comi plete, had amounted to 12s. 2d. Progress was being made .with the Wakefield Street Dedication work. The extension of Everest Creek culvert work'was now complete, the cost being £W 10s. sd. A site had been agreed upon with the fire brigade captain for. an out station 1 oh White's Line. The expenditure for the 1 fortnight ending November 15, 1910, had ; been <£130 os. 2d.—Report adopted; - Councillor Baldwin moved:—"That the i minute of October 10, authorising tho ■ calling for tenders for the carrying out ' of tho following works, viz.—Fence and [ ; tablet, Wesleyan Cemetery, Hollow, White's Line East, Baker's ' Dedication, ] and Emen'y's Dedication, lie rescinded, , and that these works be carried out by !' day work under the supervision of the 1 borough engineer." The motion was carried. ■ Councillor Baldwin gave notice to move at the council's next meeting that a return of all rates payable and amounts paid by Teligious bodies in the borough be placed oh the table. When an item appeared on the order paper, showing that the city solicitor acknowledged receipt of plans and - specifications of the Dew bridge over the - Hutt River, Councillor Baldwin said I that a recent newspaper report which > referred to tho approaches was entirely - incorrect, and that ".the Hutt Council, so i far as he was aware, had never promised. )' to build the approach on the Hutt side . of the river. . •
