THE FISHING SEASON.
NAVY OFFICERS WITH THE BOD. '■ A large number of the officers, of the warships now, in port have been .taking advantage of -,their stay in Wellington to fish the streams' in' the'neighbourhood. Commander Bowring, of H.M.S. Powerful, has beeil fishing the Wainui with' fair., success. Lieutenant Snagg went to Oh.au, but after-giving the'stream:a good trial returned-without'catching sight of a trout, let alone landing one. On his way back 'he was informed that- the stream had been "poached out," which information unfortunately came a couple of. days late. The officer is said to have lifted 'a nice thrce-pounder from the Wai.kanae. ,
On. Saturday last, Mr. T. Hamep secured 16 fish, weighing. 221b.,. from the AVainui, and during the weekend Mr. J.Esson also 'creeled. IB nice fish in the same water. . As the distanco prohibits a rush to that locality, and the season is well advanced, the Mayor .is reminded of his promise to give this matter some attention. ' Venturers to the difficult Akatarawa are said'to have been fortnnate during the week-end. . One angler's catch included a splendid four-pounder. The wonder-of the season, eo far has been the securing of a ten-pounder ixithe sluggish Waiwetu. It-p-as .caught by a well-known Hiitt angler, fishmg with a "bully." - •' .
