THE EXPECTED CONSISTORY.

WHO WILL BE THE NEW CARDINALS? The Roman correspondent of tlie "Catholic Times," writing on September 23, states:— From time to time for the past two years the long-expected Consistory has been announced and Cardinals' hats have been distributed by tho press with -amazing generosity. Tho great function, however, seems in sight at last, and probably will be held in November at latest. As the Holy See has decided to hold no ceremonies of beatification or canonisation in 1911, it may be assumed that the same decision will hold good for a Consistory. Next -year- Italy will - hold a celebration to commemorate the unity' movement, and there : will be exhibitions in Rome and Turin—hence the Pope's decision. Needless to say, candidates for, the Purple are freely mentioned. Portugal will most likely have one in the Patriarch of Lisbon, although his ■ predecessor, Cardinal Neto, who resigned three .years ago, retiring to a| Franciscan monastery, still retains the dignity of a prince of the Church. The Mapordomo of the Vatican will certainly, he:elevated to the Sacred College; while the Archbishop- of Paris may be put on the list of "probables." However, all conjecture is, to a certain extent, useless, as the next Consistory will, I hear, prove one of surprises. At present there are eighteen :l . vacancies- in- the Sacred .Col- ■ lege of Cardinals. Six princes of the Church died in 1908, four in 1909, nnd i ono only; Cardinal Satolli, passed away > in the current year. However, as yet i tho Holy Father is stated to have made , no clear sign as to his choice of new ■ Cardinals, a thing at which nobody i who has followed tho "modus 'agendi" ■ observed by the Vatican during late I years can feel surprised; for probably ■ never in the history of the Church } have official secrets been so carefully i guarded as they are. now from the curious. 1 -
