4 THE GRADING POET QUESTION. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, November 10. The Wanganui Borough Council has referred to the Tramways Committee a letter from the Napier Chamber of Commerce asking support for the Lake AVaikaixmoaua water-power scheme for (supplying the districts between Gisborne, Wellington, and Wanganui. The Wanganui Council has decided in reference to the same matter to urge instead tho claims of the Hangawhero' Falls, about 50 miles from here, which they believe to be tho more suitable for the necessities of this district. . Mr. Alex. Russell, borough engineer, is making good progress after a rather severe operation which he underwent early this week. He has been granted a 1 month's leave, his duties in the meantime beinig carried out by Mr. T. M. Copeland, foreman of works.
Mr. Wm. Henry, secretary of the Royal Life Saving Society, arrived hero this afternoon. During his stay he will conduct examinations at the schools and give demonstrations of swimming and lifesaving. The Gonville Town Board has accepted the tender of Messrs. "Woo Is ton and Hewetson for 'the following works: — Town Hall, .£483; public swimming bath, JJGtI; fire brigade station, .£157. The entries for the 'iYanganui agricultural show are very large, totalling "for live stock (all classes) 1823, home industries 735, schools 203, produce 96. The dog entries (9GI) are said to be an Australasian record. Tho Wanganui Regatta Association met last night, and made preliminary arrangements for the forthcoming amateur championship regatta. Tho programme and tho allocation of prize money is now in 'hand.
