PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(Prom Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, November 10. The Terrace End Bowling Club, though unable to officially open its green yesterday afternoon owin« to the neavy downpour of rain on the previous nay and night, held its annual "social" in, the hall on the upper floor of the pavilion. The official opening of the green will take place next Wednesday afternoon. A miniature rifle range was opened at the Campbell Street School grounds yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large assemblage, among them being the Jlayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) and Major ■M'Donald, of the Defence ' Department. Complimentary reference was made to the enterprise of the school teachers of Campbell Street in providing such a useful, adjunct to the school. Afternoon tea was dispensed hy a number of ladies connected with the 6chool. The annual prfze-giving in connection with the Sunday schools of the Palmerston Anglican churches took place last night. There was a large attendance of pupils and their parents, and Archdeacon Harper presided and presented tho prizes. A number of vocal items and dances were given by the scholars and others. A meeting of the committee of the Manawatu-Horowhcnua Boy Scout District was held last evening, Mr. E. D. Hobcn in the chair. Captain Mortyn Jones sent in his resignation as district oommandor, owing to 'his removal to Te Ivuiti. The committee accepted tho resignation with regret. Mr.. M. A. Eliott was appointed acting-district commander and Mr. T. Stagpoole acting-district secretary. The resignation was also received of Archdeacon Harper as chaplain, owing to his transfer to Wellington. Further arrangements were made in connection with the: scout field day to be held at the Palmerston show grounds on November 19. ,

.An excellent variety entertainment was given in the Opera House last night by a number of children, who have, been trained in dances, tableaux, club swinging, otc., by Mrs. Grant. The entertainmont was in aid of the technical school funds, and at the interval the Mayor and the director of tho Technical School thanked Mrs. Grant and those who took part for their assistance. Miss E. Billons, of Palmerston, who has been for some time connected with the staff of the Victoria Training School, has been appointed to the Longburn School. Palmorston N., November 11. During the three days of . the recent Manawatu A. and P. Show nearly five hundred messages were sent from the special telegraph office opened on the grounds. This, of course, indicates that the convenience was both necessary and fully appreciated. Mr. S. Carman, representative of the Wiwitea 'County Council on the Palmerston Hospital aud Charitable Aid Board, has tendered his resignation as a member of that body, owing to illhealth. Tho prizes given by the Navy League among the schools of Palmerston for the best essays on Trafalgar Day were awarded as follow:—High School, J. D. Munro, H. Bairaclough, J. Grant; Craven School, Vida Caldwell, Mary Tait; College Street School, Edna Ayling, Hillary Kendall, Olive Watson, Walter Rutherford; Terrace End School, Gordon Bennett, R. Bennett, P. Kochler; Campbell Street School, Majorie Rowles, Given Wlialley, S. Rogers, G. Tonks; Convont School, Francis Aisher.

At yesterday's meeting of the Palmerston Hospital Board, Mr. Alfrey, Government overseer of works, submitted plans in ponnection with building extensions (up to 100 beds) to tho hospital that may be required in the future. The board thought it well to have these prepared before proceeding with the proposed consumptive annexe for women. A site for the latter had already been selected, but tho plans prepared by Mr. Alfrey showed that this would not be available in view of future extensions, and the board decided to visit the hospital with a view of selecting another site for the proposed consumptive annexe. •
