SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.
EXTRAORDINARY DISTURBANCE. WHERE WAS IT? By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, November 11. The officer in charge of tho Observatory reports.that Wednesday's earth tremors lasted from seven minutes past four o'clock till eight o'clock. Tho tremors were very numerous. Tho principal portion of the disturbance commenced at fourteen minutes past four and for four miuutes tho pendulum ivas swinging quite beyond tho limits of tho sensitised paper. After the lapso of a few minutes there were more largo waves up to six and a half millimetres in amplitude recorded. The disturbance, probably within two thousand miles of Sydney, was undoubtedly a great submarine one. Early on Wednesday morning a small but pronounced quake was recorded. The Adelaide Observatory reports a similar quake, by far tho largest ever recorded there. RECORDED IN MELBOURNE. (Ree. November 12, 0.15 a.m.) Melbourne, November 11. Tho Observatory here also recorded Friday's earthquake which lasted five hours. Shortly after the start the waves , were very severe.
