SALARIES AT SEA.
AN UNATTRACTIVE CALLING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Coryriffht. Sydney, November 11. At the hearing of tho application of tho Merchant Service Guild to tho Fedj eral Arbitration Court for increased pay for masters and officers on merchant vessels, Captain Watson, secretary of the New Zealand Guild, further examined, said ho favoured the system of payment by seniority. There was a dearth of officers in Australia. The Union Steam Ship Company a few months ago was short of officers for .New Zealand; the calling did not attract, and men would not stay in it when the wages were not good enough. Something should be done to provent shipowners intimidating masters.
COST OF LIVING. (Rec. November 11, 9.35 p.m.) Sydney, November 11. The claims of the Merchant Service Guild were further heard by the Arbitration Court to-day. There having been suggestions regarding tho parties coming to terms, tho Judge asked to have the suggestions put into writing. He said he would then meet both sides.
