A case of more than ordinary inter*,,, est"was-,heard''at"Mercer a few days • ago, before Mr. Scott Smith, S.M., when a half-caste named Epiha-was charged with practising tolungaism amongst the Maoris in the .surround- . _ ing district. The evidence went to show \ that defendant had treated casesi of sickness by holding religious services over them and resorting to the old superstitions practised • amongst the Maoris. It was alleged that his moral conduct was not consistent with his religious services, and that he had been imposing upon the Maoris. The magistrate said there was no doubt but that - defendant was a real bad man. He ' was convicted, ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and ordered to pay £11 2s. 6d., the costs of tie prosecution. ,
