MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

- (Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) . POLICE CONSTABLE STRUCK. Christopher Seal' pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness,-but denied that he had assaulted Con-stable Shino when being arrested. The evidence showed that the constable had received a severe blow on tho mouth, which necessitated four stitches. The Magistrate held thaf accused must be convicted, and a fine of £3 was imposed, with expenses £1 Bs. 6d., in default twenty-one days' imprisonment. On the charge of drunkenness accused was convicted and discharged. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Francis Joseph' Lyons, an elderly man, was charged with a serious offence. Ho reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed in £150 and two sureties of £75 each. Mr., I'. Jackson appeared for the accused. ALLEGED ASSAULT CASES. In the case, in which Lucy Maguire sued Mary Ellen Hastings for alleged assault, there was no appearance of the parties, and the information was dismissed. The case of Round v. Wales, alleged assault, was, on the application of Mr. M'Grath, adjourned till November 24.. BY-LAWS BROKEN. For leaving vehicles for more than five minutes, Daniel Griffin, George Longhurst, and William M'Farlane wero eacli fined 10s., witlj costs 75., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. George . Longhurst was also charged with having no light on his vehicle, and- was fined 10s., with costs 75.. in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, Walter Miles, for tho same offence, was similarly penalised. - Ngan Kee was fined 205., with costs 75., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, for failing to close his shop at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2. For leaving a tram car whilst in motion', James Malachi Sheridan was fined 55., with costs, and expenses totalling £1 7s. 6d., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.

OTHER CASES.

James Troy pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and as there were several previous convictions against him,, ho was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Mary Mullen, on a charge of drunkenness, made no appearance. and was ordered to forfeit her bail of 205., in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. One first-offending inebriate was fined 55., in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. William Kidd admitted that on October 1, at Pukerua, he threw a milkcan from a train which might have endangered the lives of persons travelling oil the railway. The explanation was that defendant had expected the train to stop at'the station, and intended to set the milk-can down. The train did not stop, and defendant had, according to his explanation, accidentally dropped the can. Ho was fmcd 55., costs 75., in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. - in thq Onslow Borough, wore, on the application of Mr. P. Jackson, adjourned till November 18. Three charges against J. \V. Easson and Co., for driving, across a footway at Kilbirnie, wero withdrawn by leave of tho Court. Permission was also given to withdraw charges against Robt, Hodgson and Peter M'Ardle, for leaving tramcars while in motion, also charges against Leonard Linney and Thomas Pago iot attempting to mount tramcars while in motion. CIVIL BUSINESS. (Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) DAMAGES FOR TRESPASS. Reserved judgment was delivered in the caso in which Timothy Twomey, blacksmith, of-Lower Hutt, sued Daniel Burke, of Gear Island, to recover £60 for damages for trespass on plaintiff's property. Judgment -was for plaintiff for £40. Mr. H. O'Leary appeared for plaintiff, and M. J. J. M'Grath for defendant.
