In the Federal Senato, during ■ the second rcadiug debate on tho Naval Defence Bill, Senator Gould said he thought they should make .it plain that the Commonwealth would placo its ships under tho control of tho Imperial authorities in time of war. Senator Stewart deprecated a Navy, as too expousivo. A oitizen army of a quarter of a million should enable Australia to defend herself against any enemy. He instanced the Boer War. Senator Pearco, Minister for Defence: "We have a cornio opera army." Tho second reading was carried, and the Bill reported without amendment. END OF THE SESSION. Molbourne, November 4. The Land Tax Bill was read a second timo in the Senate and reported without amendment. Tho Federal Government hopes to olose the session on November 18. EMPLOYERS' INTERESTS. Melbourna, November 4. The committeo appointed to advise the Employers' Federation concerning reforenda Bills, reported that it considered'the employers' interest jeopardised by the. Commonwealth Government's industrial proposals.

A certificate of registration has been granted under the Commonwealth Arbitration Act to tho Rural Workers' Union of Australia as connected with tho agricultural, viticultural, fruitgrowing, and dairying industries.
