Since tho ratepayers rejected the loan proposal; to. .providea new library and museum building,: tKe Manawatu Philosophical Society has been casting about for a.new placo of accommodation for its museum. At last night's meeting of tie Borough Council an application, was made for the iuso of tho,old fire brigade,hall. . The application was referred t<) the Public Works' Committee. .. Now promises for tho Union Bank of Australasia will bo put in hand almost immediately. . It is expected that:the building will take about twelve: months to complete. . . . At a.meeting of the Friendly Sc- ' pieties' Council last night,, further arrangements were made in connection with the. annual picnic on New Year's Day, which this year will be held on the* Ash'hurst Domain. ■ . ■ ' ■■ ' A miniature rifle range will be opened at tho Campbell Street School on the afternoon- of November 9. " • . At last night's meeting of the- Borough Council there was considerable discussion'on a letter from Dr. Frengley as to tho state of tho town water supply, which has a dirty appearanco after .each rainfall. Tho doctor's report showed that although there was; nothing harmful to health in the water, it certainly had a very bad. appearance, and he recommended that some method of filtration should be adopted. Tho Council had already instructed tho engineer to bring in a report on filtration, and is awaiting this before talcing action. At the annual meeting of the Palmerston Starr-Borokott Society last night, Messrs.'W. Hunter and C. E. Dompsey were re-elected directors, and Mr. Hunter was elected chairman of directors. . ■ ■ . . The Palmerston Tennis Club will open its courts on Saturday, November 12. The courts are- being worked into fine order. - The club has just elected fifteen new members, nnd tlie season promises to be a prosperous one. A deputation from the Manawatu Cricket Association waited on the Palmerston Borough Council at its last meeting to ask for a reduction in tho charges for the uso of the sports ground. After discussion, it was decided to allow tlio association the free use of the ground, the association to prepare its own pitches and keep the ground in order, the council undertaking to cut tho grass when necessary.
