A threat to "stonewall" the Noxious Weeds Amendment' Bill was made by a member of the House, last evening if the Minister in charge of the Bill accepted a certain amendment. ■ Exception was taken to the word "stonewall by the mover of the clause,.whereupon Mr. Wilford jocularly advised the speaker who had used the word to get over the difficulty by interjecting "he would hinder tho peregrinations of the Bill through the Chamber."
An event of some interest in the form of an attempt to bettor a. world's. 100mile unpaced road record is arranged to take place on Wednesday next on the stretch of road between Masterton and Featherston. . It is promoted -by the Dunlop Bubber Co, of Australasia, Ltd., and'the attempt is under the auspices of the . Wellington : branch of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen, the aspirant to the championship being >& ' Levin athlete, W. A. O'Donnell. It is proposed to start O'Donnell from Masterton about 5 o'clock oh the morning of November 9th on a measured course of 25 miles, terminating in or about Featherston, which road O'Donnell will cover out and home twice, completing the 100 miles in Masterton, at which place he ought to arrive about 10 a,m. The Dunlop Rubber Company, in order that the rider's performance will be.officially recorded, is arranging for two league officials to be. present at the attempt, and Mr P. W. Fowler, of Masterton, is,specially appointed by the league to survey tho course. This test of speed and endurance is introduced with- a view to determining "whether an Australasian road rider is capable of . accomplishing such a performance as that just recorded in England by Leon.Meredith, anil the Dunlop Rubber Company of Australasia, Ltd., has decided to offer £20 to the first Australasian rider who can better Meredith's time, the performance to be accomplished ■ over an. out-and-home course.. This offer, is open to either amateurs or professionals, a trophy to be awarded should an amateur rider succeed in bettering 4 hours 52. minutes 51 seconds:..
