SNOW IN THE SOUTH.
FRUIT; AREAS AND : STOCK SUFFER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Invercargill, October 6. The weather during last night was the most severe experienced: in Southland dur-. ing all : the winter.' Snow, fell in most places, and quite three inches in the interior of: the-western district. : Heavy showers of hail fell at intervals, which, together with tho heavy wind, did considerable damage to the . cherry, plum, and pear areas. In somo districts the • mortality, amongst the young lambs must be heavy. The tops of hills on the high country are covered with a heavy coating of snow, and should a; day of warm weather follow immediately, heavy floous will eventuate. The weather is now moderating.'but the temperature is still very low. . Dunedin, October 6. • The weather : is quite wintry,-, und threatening snow. The thermometer reading is the lowest for years. '■' -■ Goro, October 6. The weather was very cold yesterday, and also'to-day. Four inches of snow fell early this morning, but had disappeared by noon. .Westerley winds and rain make floods probable. The conditions are severe on young lambs. ...
