Saunders Bros, -are engaged in widening the old cutting into the pen insula to tho regulation C6ft. now prescribed by law. The three undertakings, which are being carried out under an agreement between tho' Harbour Board and tho Mirnmnr Borough Council, art, progressing, conjointly, and with favourable woather ought to be well on tho way to completion early in tho new year. The work has been'somewhat retarded by bad weather during the winter months and land-slips, but excellent headway is now being made and no exceptional difficulties havo been met with. Barring the unfortunate accident of some mouths ago—when one man lost his life and another suffered serious injury through a fall of earth—thohas been free from any. serious mishap. A good deal of reclamation is being done in tho vicinity of t.lio ne»v wharl, the spoil from the cutting being' used for the purpose, and, the result will bo a substantial esplanade which will add considerably to the attractiveness of thu locality. When completed the new wharf and cutting should aid materially 'in the development of Greater Wellington by affording an easy and necessary outlet for much of the congestion at present ex-, isting in regard to tho industrial lifo of tho city. ■ .
