Ho discovered thallium, pioneered in the study of radiant matter and spectroscopy, invented tho radiometer and tho spinthariscope, and. has written scientific treatises on dyeing and calico printiiig, on artificial manures, on sewage, and on the wheat problem. Liko Lord Kelvin, he is a scientist who is at tho same time an earnest Christian believer in the invisible world and in immortality. Every fresh discovery, writes ono who knows Sir AVilliam, deepens for him the wonder of life, and he has himself said that ho never takes up a telophono without feeling that he is handling a mystery.
