MEN'S BROTHERHOOD.
■+ —:__ ADDRESS BY MR. D.M'LAREN, M.P. The inclement weather did not prevent agood attendance at tho recently-formed Wellington CityMen'sßrotherhood meeting in the King's Theatre yesterday, afternoon. Jlr. B. J. Carey. occupied tho chair, and introduced Dr. jPetlit,' who traced the growth' of the University Student A'oluntcor Movement and tho lay-, man's Missionary Movement: Tho lijain address was given by' Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., oil the subject of "Christian Fellowship, and :t.ho Organisation of .Society." The speaker referred to tho lack in tho Greek philosophic systems of interest' in the average man, and of the spirit of love and sympathy:, this lac.k was'supplied in tho practical teachings of Jesus Christ, and-he commended the Brotherhood for its endeavour to'give an illustration of these in its organisation. The law of "mutual-aid"' was one recognised by scientists: Animals out off from association with others surrendered their existence, but. gregarious- animals lived and multiplied, and; the scientific law was mirrored in Christ's teaching 'concerning lovoi and sympathy, or, in one . word, .brotherhood. Ho was pleased to know that labour leaders in the Old Land had the closest association with, the Brotherhood movement. Tht> Labour party had often been wrongly associated in people's conceptions with material views of life. A\ 7 hile it was true, the roots of the movement were in material things, tho growth of the branches reached up to tho highest levels, and the object, of. the, party was constructive work aiming at the production of character. That was a higher aim than ■ that. of some of the old-school of political j economy, who seemed to view the great object of life as the amassing of wealth. ■-,-.. ' . ... The address was listened to with the closest attention, and , whs punctuated with evident marks of,appreciation. The soloist for the afternoon was Mr. Lay. cock. The secretary, announced that the Hon. Dr. Findlay'would speak at the next meeting on "Prison Reform," and tho registrar stated that the membership nowstood at 128. Some additions were made at tho close of the meeting. At the meeting last evening tho address was given by Mr: Blamires. Master Allen contributed a solo.
