RULES OF THE CONTEST.
It has been agreed that in races for the • sculling championship of ■ tho world, the following conditions shall be observed:— (1) The rules shall, bo those now adopted, and. named "The Championship Boat Race Laws." ' (2) The' courso shall be not less than three miles, nor more than four and a quarter miles, straight away. • Tho holder has the right to name tho course. (3) The stakes shall be as follow:—-Not; less than ,£SOO a-sidc when it is an: international contest; not less than ;C2OO a-sido when two.scullers of tho.same place .or country row. (4) The "gato money".'shall' bo divided so that each man receives an equal, share. (5) A challenge.shall only bo recognised as bona iido when accompanied by a deposit of ,£IOO if the race be' international, and .£25 if between local men, and this placed in the hands of a reputable' person, who shall "notify the- person challenged of the nature of the challenge. ('(!)• A holder of the championship must accept a bona lido challenge within three months, and must race, within six months of tho acceptance of the challenge, or forfeit his title, uidess he has td row* in another country, when the limit shall bo. nine months, (i) Richard Arnst, of Christchnrch, is hereby recognised as champion sculler of the world;'and it is agreed to recognise as his successor anyone, who may defeat him, or to whom he may forfeit by default; provided always tho rules and conditions now agreed to are duly observed. In tho event of tho death or retirement of a holder of tlio title, the championship shall revert to the immediate . ex-champion.
