(l"rom Our Special..Correspondent.) • Palmerston North, August I?.' There was a good attendanco of members at.tho weekly meeting of the local Debating and-Literary. Society last night, when the. subject for debate was: "The influences for good in the history of mankind of the poet, the statesman, and the .warrior respectively." Nearly a score of members took part in the discussion, which proved interesting, some of the speakers having' gone - to considerable pains to work up their subjects. Tin, leaders 'were :• Messrs. R. H. .Billons, Pox, and Downie, and at the conclusion of the debate, a vote was taken, which proved to be in favour of the statesman as wielding the greatest force for good. The' evergreen subject,- "Leasehold and Freehold," will be- debated at the next meeting. ..,.,', , ~.,
The Oroua Lodge of. Druids met last night, when there was a large attendance, and Bro.' F. Harriman presided. Two new members were initiated, and another proposed. A request from the Salvation Army for assistance at its Sail was held over till next meeting. It was decided to work up ii programme to ■ assist the Kongotea Lodge at its entertainment. IBro.,Harriman. was presented with the'medal 'won by him in the'ritual competition, and Bro. Schultz ,the' prize won' in the card tournament. Some very important matters are'to be dibcusscci next lodge night, which is a summoned meetiug. .... The committee of the Palmerston Choral Society has decided to call a general meeting ot members, with the object of putting the oratorio "The. Messiah" in rehearsal. It is understood Mr. 31. Cohen has consented to act as conductor.
