:« THE RETORT COURTEOUS, (rruid utir NDceiai uorrcanundcni.i Masterton, August 18. In the Magistrate's Court -at Masterton this morning, before Mr. L. C. Keid, S.M., judgment was given for plaintiffs, by default, in the following coses:—J. L. Murray v. Kuku JCaraitiana, £11 7s. Gd., and costs £1 Us. Cd.; 0. S. Hall v.. J. Thompson, 155., and costs Bs.; Fred J. Heylivu v. George Pratt, .SI!) 10s., and costs .til 10s. Cd. In a judgment summons, Archie Mason was ordered to pay J. L. Murray M 14s. Cd., forthwith, the order to be suspended if defendant makes a satisfactory, arrangement before September 18. Arthur Uoodin was ordered to pay £5 13s. 7d. to Harold Crawford forthwith, in default sevtm days' imprisonment the order to be suspended on payment of ss. monthly. The Retort. Mr. Arthur H. Vile, of this town, has written the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, who suggested the other evening that he (Mr. Vile) should be immersed in a duck-pond, asking if the sanctuary is not already over-filled with old geese. Friendly Societies. The annual meeting of the Friendly Societies' Council was held last evening, Bro. Smith presiding over a large attendance of members. The report and bal-ance-sheet for the year, showing a credit balance of £i lis. 8d„ were read and adopted. The following'' officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Bro. Darroch (Foresters); vice-president, Bro. Throadwoll (Rechabites); treasurer, Bro. Perry (Oddfellows); secretary, Bro. O'Kegan (Hibernian). A hearty vole of thanks was passed to the retiring president (Bro. Smith) for the- interest- he had always taken'in the work of the council.'
, A meeting of ratepayers to consider the proposal to raise a loan of .£34,000 for the extension of the Masterton drainage system is to be held in tho Town Hall to-morrow evening. The members of the Masterton Fire Brigade held a "good-bye social" in their old station last evening. The brigade, which is a very enthusiastic body, takes possession of the.fine new. brick station in Queen Street shortly.
Mr. Kedi, S.Ar., gave judgment in 'the Magistrate's Court this morning in. a case in which a Carterton resident claimed damages from two Masterton residents on account of a collision in which a gig, driven hy plaintiff's wife, came, to grief. His Worship held that the evidence did not. disclose negligence on the part of of defendants, and non-suited the plaintiff with ■ ,£ll 10s. costs. / I A Jockey's Outfit. An interesting case was.heard in the Magistrate's Court this morning in which a Masterton tailor named — Ball, claimed J3 10s. from a Mr. Baildon, of Pahiatuaj the price of a suit of clothes and racing colours supplied to a jockey named C. Cress. It appears that Baildon was part-owner of a racehorse named Tyrannic. This horse was ridden by. Cress at Martinborough and .won a race. Plaintiff alleged "that, in celebration of the win, Cress ordered a new suit of clothes and some racing colours t which ho asked to be put down to Baildon. It was admitted in' evidence that it had. been suggested giving Cress a now suit of clothes, but no actual authority was given. The magistrate' nonsuited plaintiff with costs.
The Masterton branch of the St. John Ambulance Society has been unable this year to get together a sufficient number ,of members to start a class: It is proposed to make an energetic canvass. for new members.
A hockey match for the ThompsonPayno shield was played to-day and was won by the St. Matthews' team. St. Matthews juniors defeated Excelsior for the. Booth Cup.
The "VVairarapa Rifle Association has decided to hold its annual "shoot" on October 20. A number of trophies, have been promised for competition and a programme,.. similar, to that ■of last year has been' arrange,d.„
