CENTRAL MISSION
A SUCCESSFUL ANNIVERSARY. . . Tho three services conducted by tho E-ev! C. H. Laws at. the King's theatre yesterday in connection with tho anniversary of the. Wellington Central Mission weru most successful, the morning and evening sorvioes being especially well attended. In the afternoon Mr. Laws took for his subject: "England To-day: A Social Study," and delivered a powerful and inspiring address on the earliest aspects of social work among the poorer classes in England, v depicting with graphic incident the life and social condition of the workingman of London. The speaker dwelt upon the necessity for the churches to make a stand for righteousness in tho building up and improving of the lot of these people, and so rescue them, from, the appalling depths to which extreme' poverty' and social vicissitudes had degraded thorn. . In. the evening Mr. Laws delivered an imprcssivo address. • upo.-i the subject: "What is a Christian?" emphasising tho fallacy which endowed the mere possession of a. creed with spiritual salvation. It was, he said, upon (ho testimohy r of. a man's life that his true value as a Christian depended; ' - - ' Mrs. -Orr-Loring, ' tho well-known "soprano of Dunedih, assisted noon service with-a. charming, rendering of Handel's aria "Come Unto Me I '.
