CANADIAN TARIFF.

SPEECH BY SIR WILFRID LATJRIER. UNITED STATES KNOCKING AT • . THE "DOOR. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Ree. August 14, 5.5 p.m.) Ottawa, August 13. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada, addressing 10,000 people at Alberta, said: ■ "You are all Free-traders—and I am also. Fox, Gladstone, Bright, and Cobden are my models; but a young country cannot • adopt Free-trade ■in the same way as England, which derives revenue from the luxuries of the leisured classes. It is impossible to tax new settlers, and the bulk of the finances must at present be raised from Customs duties." He promised a revision pi ,tho tariff, and said he expected that reciprocal trade with the United States would' speedily be established. The United States was knocking at Canada's door, but.until now Washington had made no fair proposal. The Toronto correspondent of "The Times" says the Western farmers, who demand a lower tariff,, are overwhelmingly favourable to Empire preference. Ho denies that there is a ■likelihood of a material reduction in duties. ,
