WHAT THE CHURCHES ARE DOING.
'SKRMOITBY REV. W. SHIIIEB. ■|. ——— Preaching at St. James's Presbyterian Church, Wellington, • yesterday, on "Ye did it Unto iMo,"l the Rev. William Shirer said: "The, liberality of the ciiurchos' was sometimes criticised. It was not fitful and spasmodic, but regular and systematic. Some, church people, gave individually, and some through the churches.' This should bo remembered. 'Righteous judgment in every, connection would deter needless criticism. . The Church remembered the children's claims by regular, quiet work, frequently ignored. Efforts were made by teaching religion intelligently, by, erecting Sabbath school buildings, by caring for the needy,' by visiting the sick, to care, for children of those within and without their church.' What are the churches doing? , Let:inquirers come and see for themselves and help. When the appeal came .for the-Chil-dren's Hospital they responded as soon as possible. .No challenge was recognised, nor, as tho Ministers' Association hod affirmed, were its claims affected by recent controversies. The association, the Presbytery, the medical profession, and others had stated'the case. ' Individual churchmen had already, helped, others desired to do so collectively through their ■ churches. .Few causes bettor deserved tho attention and heln of the various churches than the Children's Hospital."'
