■ ._. j SCOTCH PETITIONS. I•. . . BISHOP SAYS OFFENSIVE OATH IS TRUEST CHARITY. WHAT DR. CLIFFORD WANTS. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. (Ecc. July 26, 9.35 p.m.) . London, Jnly 26. Three , hundred Scottish petitions against the Coronation Declaration Bill have reached the House of Commons. A petition from 2500 Canadians in favour of the existing Declaration has-also been received. The-Bishop of Manchester (Dr. Knox) presided at a crowded meeting in support of tho, maintenance of the Protestant Succession. Ho declared that ho. was aware that tho terms of the Declaration were offensive.to a large number of the-King's subjects, but there were, occasions when it was the truest charity to. speak plainly. The Declaration in its present form was a real bulwark against the horror of a civil "religious war. Dr. ■ Clifford, the well-known Baptist minister, in a letter, remaTks that the Bishop of Chichester (Dr. Ridgeway) gets near what is wanted : in suggesting that the Declaration shall assert that tho Pope has no jurisdiction in. England. ■ • ■ ■• '■
