MR. CHAMBERLAIN'S BIRTHDAY.
TARIFF REFORM CELEBRATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. London, July 8. Numerous Tariff Reform gatherings are being hold to-day in honour of Mr. Joseph Chamberlain's seventy-fourth birthday.
In connection with Mr. Chamberlainfe birthday celebrations the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, received the following cable message from London. The messages are given as supplied from the Prime Minister's office. An error, however, appears to have been made in addressing the reply to "Duke". of Mowbray,. Lord Mowbray, .at latest advices, not having been olefated beyond tho rank of baron. ,
„ . "London, July 8. A number of personal friends and admirers of Mr. Chamberlain, who are this evening celebrating the occasion of his eoveuty-fourth birthday, desire to send Imperial greeting to the Dominion through the medium of its Prime Minister. Signed, Mowbray, Prince's Restaurant, London."
The Prime Minister dispatched the following cablegram in reply:— "Duke of Mowbray, London. Every strenuous friend of Imperialism, wherever ho may be, and whatever be his political party, is in this country esteemed a friend, and he whoso life today reaches its seventy-fourth milestone is known and honoured here for the splendid work he has done to draw our umpire into closer unity and greater harmony. For this reason New Zealand .sends its greeting and best wishes for ™ an y .happy returns of his birthday to the Kight Honourable Joseph Chaniberlain. Signed, Ward."
