TO THOSE WHO EAT. PORK

. DISQUIETING STATISTICS. At the Municipal Conference yesterday, Mr. B. F. H. Hemingway (Stratford) moved:— That the. slaughtering of swino bo placed on the same footing asthat of other stock. He stated that,,although sheep could not bo killed in an abattoir district, and pigs could, yet during the year ended March 31, 1909, out of all the. sheep slaughtered in the Dominion only 4.20 per thousand were condemned as diseased, whilo the. proportion of pigs was 83.80 per thousand. Mr. J. A. Miller (Hastings) seconded tho motion. It was pointed out that tho proposal was already placed in the Government's 'Bill, but -'delegates regarded it as so important that tho conference should, nevertheless, deal with it. Mr. J. A.-Nash (Palmerston North) said that ho, had been told on good authority that out of a certain shipment of 25 pigs 16 were diseased. "If you're fond of pork," he added, "I advise, you to give it up." The-motion was unanimously carried.
