A meeting to protest against the detention of the.steamer Indradevi in 'Auckland was held at the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. ' Mr, H. J. Marriner, who presided, said that since the fire on the vessel the Marino Department would not allow the' vessel to come south to discharge her cargo, while others said that she could be patched up and.could proceed. The cargo was under water, and was,deteriorating. Other chambers of commerce had moved in the matter. The secretary read a letter from the Dunedm Chamber, in which it had urged-the Government to allow the steamer to proceed. ■Mr. J. G. Moore said that some action should be taken by the Christchurch Chamber. The vessel could come south without any danger. He moved':—"That this meeting of members of the- Chamber of Commerce andof consignees urge the Minister for Marine to allow the steamer to proceed sooth at.6iiCß.as, particularly in vietv. of the statements made at Duuedin. the detention was contrary to the advice of the 1 underwriters' surveyors and the officers, of the vessel."
