CHURCH UNION.
IN CANADA AND SCOTLAND. to note, writes Dr. V'tchett m the "Southern. Cross/' that y 184 votes to 73, the Presbyterian General Assembly of Canada has appioved of a basi* of union with tho Methodist and Congregational Churches of the Dominion. The Methodist Conference is certain to carry the proposal tor union by a majority ,as largo, or wen larger; and the Congregational Uiurches m Canada have shown a moro practical and earnest desire for union than tho Churches of the. same name in Australia. A movement so great; and cliaiged with such vast issues, of course progresses slowly. The jireseut negotiations have been going oil for seven years, and another seven years may pass before the union is consummated; tor the whole question must bo remitted to the Iresbytenes and Synods of tho Churches concerned. But that', the movement for union has reached its present stage is a matter, for profound uelight. The union movement in Canada, which was started by the Presbyterian Church, originated in the difficulties of providing for the religious needs of fast-increasing immigrants in an immense territority. -
