KNYVETT CAMPAIGN.

A MILITARY OFFICER HOOTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedln, July 1. A meeting in connection with the Knyvett case was held in His Majesty's Theatre to-night, and' was attended by about 150 people, Mr. R. Brinsley presiding. Speeches were given by Messrs. Armstrong, Peacock aud Black, who spoke on lines similar to their addresses made in the north. Mr. A. R. Barclay moved:—

That this meeting, having heard tho facts of the Knyvett case as sot forth by the speakers from Auckland, expresses its strong opinion that Parliament should pass the necessary legislation to provide for a new and fair trial for Captain Knyvett; and prevent a travesty of justice similar to that of tho Knyvett case occurring in the case of other persons who may be officially accused of military crimes in the Dominion'. Licut.-Colonel Smith moved as aa amendment: "That this meeting, declines to take any steps that wiirhamper ■ the Defence Department in the maintenance of the discipline of the forces of tho Dominion."

The chairman expressed doubt whether this was really an amendment, bnt Lieut.-Colonel Smith, amid hooting and boohing from tho audience that was distinctly hostilo to his proposal, insisted that it bo put. When it was seconded and put, he was the only man who voted for it, and Mr. Barclay's motion was carried.
