VICTORIA BOWLING CLUB.

/' ANNUAL MEETING. . The fourteenth annual meeting of tho Victoria Bowling Club, Ltd., was held ill the club pavilion last evening, Mr. W. J. Hueston presiding over a gathering of about 60 members. The chairman, -in commenting on the report and s balance-sheet, a precis of -wllich has been published, said the bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of .£3l IBs. which was double tho amount to credit at tlii? time last year. This credit, said Mr. Hueston, was still not a big enough balance to keep the club going for- four months. Although subscriptions were due on June- 1 it-was the habit of a good many members not to pay up until play commenced in October. He emphasised a point mentioned in tho report, viz., that wherever possible, subscriptions should be paid early. Thanks were due to tho Ground Committee, Messrs. Mayer and Scott, for the immense amount of work they had put in, and to Mr. Kellow who filled a breach during the illness of tho auditor. Referring to challenge trophies the chairman said he thought they should bo played for every week as demanded by the rules. .The rules, however, were more honoured in the breach than in the observance. It was not fair to donors .of trophies or to challengers that the games should not be played weekly. In his opinion it should be compulsory to play every week, and the Matoh Committee should be empowered to strike out the names of men who did not so play. ' The adoption of the report and balance sheet was .agreed to after a brief discussion. The election of officers resulted as under :—President, Mr. J. S. Keith; directors, Messrs. J. W. Fossette, H. Langdon, C. B. Norwood, G. E. Godber, F. Townsend, and A. Longrnore; lion, secretary, Mr. W. E. Redstone; lion, treasurer, Mr. "J. Kellow; lion, auditor, Mr.' R. Dixon; delegate to- Northern Bowling Association, Mr. C, Bary; delegates to. Wellington Cefitre, Messrs. F. Kitto and W. -J. Hueston. , Mr. Vareoe moved; "That it be an in-, struction to the Match Committee to arrange club matches in the following order;— Rinks, pairs, singles, and rink matches-to reach final stage before pairs are begun; Pairs to, reach semi-final before commencing singles. Time-limit for each round to be strictly observed." - The mover said the object of tho mo-.tion-was to prevent the clashing of chib matches. The new idea would also give ■first-year -players a chance qf being of help to-their partners in club matches. He thought that if the motion was carried tho whole of the members could join in club competitions. He had over-, looked the matter of junior, singles in framing, the. motion, but this he thought might be left to the committee. The chairman.thought tho 'ilea of getting the matches olf as suggested was a, good- one. In years past the.'time-limit, a most, important point, 'had- been' overlooked. Mr. Dixon said there'.;had never, yet. been a match committee'ihat"h'n'd a'stiff' 'enough back to enforce the time-limit without fear'! or favour. .■ After '.somC-'furtber: discussion-it was decided to place the games mentioned in the motion in the following order; Singles, rinks, pairs. In this form the motion was carried. _ The chairman said there were now SG names on the membership roll, which was, of course,i limited to 100. .There were seven nominations for the four vacancies and an election would be held on Saturdav' afternoon. It was decided that the club's annual social gathering should take the. form of a euchre party. It was decided to ,place the photograph of the retiring president on the walls of the club-room. Xr. Keitn, in returning the thanks of the club for thephotograph, expiossed the hope that other -previous presidents, would foljow the good example set. . The meeting concluded with votes ot thanks .to the president,. directors, and other retiring officers.
