STILL PERSEVERING. In spite of decided opposition from the Karori Borough Council, on the score of . impractibility, • 6upporters of the construction of a shorter tramway route to Karori, via Upland Road, Kelburne, are still' earnestly desirous of placing their plans before the ratepayers. , Last evening, in the Karori Parochial Hall, a meeting (convened by Mr. W. Beauchamp-Platts)'was attended by a score ■ of. ratepayers.' Its purpose was to establish a, committee, whose duty it would be to organise, with a view to acquainting all ratepayers with authentic facts about the proposed new line. "Wo want to organise," suid the chairman,. Councillor R. H. Wedde, "so that the ratepayers will soon see, with us,' that the tramway across Kelburne is the best thing wo can go in for at the present juncture, and that the Sydney Street route cannot compare with it." On the suggestion of several ratepayers, it was agreed that/before the schemecould be subjected' to the opinion of ratepayers at a poll, reliable figures, prepared by an engineer, and dealing particularly with the estimated cost and the strength of the viaduct, should be obtained. i . , t . "There is determined opposition on the part of his Worship the Mayor of Karori and somo councillors," remarked . a resident, "and wo want to controvert what had been said by facts, not 'talk.'" . The chairman said that one of the reasons why they were fighting for the Kelburne route was that, if the City Council bore the cost of the proposed line, the work would still be done at the expense of Karori, paradoxical as the statement might seem. The Kelburne extension, even if it cost ,£IO,OOO, would, in hm opinion, show a much bigger return than any other section in the city, Lambton Quay included. The Mayor had estimated that 400,000 passengers (out Df the average of 760,000 for a year; might travel over, tho; proposed new line, and he had said that this would give tho Kelburne Tram Company per annum in pence. If that were so, a similar sum would also be earned, by the Karori Borough, but tho speaker considered that the . traffic, would produce twice that amount. ■ Seeing that Karori Borough . Council were thinking, of laying down two additional sections of tramway to tho , foot of Makara Hill, ho looked upon it ■ as utter folly to talk of handing over to the city tho present sections. A ratepayer: Have we the City. Council's consent to go over tho proposed route? The chairman: Tho Borough Council aro trying to stop us from getting contents. They are not allowing us even to find out whether consents will be refused. It is'not very dignified for a deputation of ratepayers to attend a borough council meeting .in-.,support of a project which the council has already thrown' out. On .the motion of the chairman those present resolved to form themselves into a committee( with power to add to their number)-for the purpose of furthering tho scheme ■ by, employing a secretary and canvassers, hiring halls'for meetings, etc. Tho following were enrolled as a committee:—Messrs. R. H. Wedde, W. Beau-chatap-Platts, S. Kirkcaldio, W. F. Newcombc, Carey, Edwards, J. Hamilton W. (J. Tustin, E. J. Standen, C. Mann, E. E. Hammond, C.' E. Ward, Murdoch, A. Williams, F. J. Walmsley, H. Marshall, and Captain G. T. Hall. Subscription lists were handed round with a'view to providing "fighting funds" for the carrying on of the campaign, ratepayers being asked to subscribe at the 'rate of 2s. tor every £100 voitti of land owned by them (Government valuation, ■unimproved). One of the conditions of subscription was that after the proposals were settled tho surplus funds (if any) should be returned pro rata, or applied to :my purpose decided upon at a special jneeting'called to consider ths disposal of the funds.
