FOOTBALL. 'WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION. ' THE HUTT AFFAIR, ' A DRAMATIC ENDING. The Management Committeo' of the Wellington Rugby Union met last evening, ■ there being present: Messrs. S. Brown (chairman), W. Perry, A. B. Wilson, J. Burns, J. 'F. Sullivan, W. Hardham, J: Sweeney, and P. Peters. Selwyn Club complained that no referee tad turned up for the fourth-class match, Selwyn v, Melrose, drawn for lost Saturday, and claimed a refund of 155.-for brake hire. The refund was approved by the committee, who resolved also thut thematter should be reported to the Referees' Association. Melroso were also awarded a refund of 15s. , St. James Club reported that, on June i,. their fourth-class team journeyed to Lower Hutt to play the Hutt team, but, as the referee appointed did not put in an appearance, and the Hutt team did not agree to a substitute, application was made for a refund of 15s. travelling ex.penses. ,The refundwas grunted. . •, . SoOthern Club made application for a refund of half expenses for their fourths class team, drawn to play the Hutt Club oii'Saturday last; the reason being that Hutt had defaulted. The committee' resolved to; impose a fine upon the Hutt team' of the whole expenses cf the Southern team, in addition to the usual fine of is.'for defaulting without giving notice. Athletic Club claimed 10s. as thetravelling expenses of their third-class team to .Mirainar Park last Saturday,- Melrose having defaulted. Tho committee finod Melroso the amount of the expenses, and an additional 55., for defaulting without notice. ' i ' ■ A ruling was asked by the St. James Club as to what constituted "three playing Saturdays." J. Moffatt, ».- mdmber of the senior team, had been disqualified for ; that, term. Since that time, the senior team bad'hod a bye, and it had been stated that that Saturday did not count as ono of those upon which a player.was required to stand down. The St. James Club expressed the opinion that the Saturday should count, as all matches had.,- been played as usual under tho jurisdiction of the union, and was certainly a "playing" . Saturday. It seemed unfair, tho club wrote, that a player belonging 'to another club should havo to stand-down for three weeks only, whereas a 'member of the St.' James team, who had.been disqualified for a similar term, should hare -to. stand down for a. week longer. The club.had a.firm impression that Moffatt might be played' again on Jime 25. Tho. committee's ruling was that ; "three playing Saturdays" meant three Saturdays upon which the team concerned actually engaged in matches. Southern Club wrote asking that the committee should reconsider their decision ' not to permit of the withdrawal of the club's team for the junior competition. It was pointed out that members of the Southern" junior team" were .now classified as juniors. The committee decided that thn request could not be granted. Following out this decision, it was resolved that Molroso'' Club (whose third-class team had defaulted three times) should, be asked to provide a third-class team. It was mentioned that application- had been made by Melroso for tho withdrawal of that teiim, the request . having been refused. A telegram - .was received from' Canterbury asking- if arrangements' could be made for the playing of a match, Canterbury t. Wellington, on September 17. Consideration .was deferred. Athletic Club withdrew a protest against Johnsonvilln, a mistake having been made regarding the-identity of one player. .-' ■ -■■ • • The transfers of C. Stannard from the Hutt Club to the Butchers' (Wednesday) Club, and of S. Phillips from St. James to Tramways (Wednesday) Club wore granted. . ■' ' " '"' Manawatu Rugby Union wrote asking if it would be possible to arrange a match with the Wellington representatives when the. latter were on their way to' Auckland in. a few weeks' time. Tho secretary was instructed to ascertain whether Wellington owed Manawatu a match. • Further inquiry was made into a dispute which took place between two players at the conclusion of the match between Melrose and St. James at Lower Hutt recently. J. Marshall, of Molrose team (who was fined £\ on a charge of assault, when brought before Mr! W G. Kiddell, S.M.), and C. Ryder, of St. James, came before the committee, and were. examined, together with other witnesses. The committee discussed the case, and, deciding that the assault was preceded by certain provocation, ordered that Marshall should be suspended until the end of the first' round (four Saturdays). ' The rejected proposals varied from suspension for one week to suspension for three years. In regard to Ryder, it was resolved that further inquiry should be mado into the statement made by him. . ■ When the resolution regaling Marshall hud. been passed, Mr. Peters (who had proposed suspension for three years) remarked that ho disagreed with the amount of the punishment imposed, and, that if; that was the way football was going to. be managed, he Tvould be better out of it. He would therefore bid his tellow-committeemra "good-night." A delegate: That's a dramatic 'SnisTi to it, anyway. WEDNESDAY MATCHES OFF. - Owing to the downpour of rain yesterday ah matches in tho Rugby and Association Wednesday competitions were abandoned. • I COLLEGE RUGBY MATCH. , OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY. Smith, College half was then penalised for holding the ball in front of his goal, and tho place-kick registered a good goal.
