GOLFING ON SUNDAYS.
STRONG PROTEST IN CHRISTCHURCH. REJOINDER ON BEHALF OF rLAYERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Ghristchurch, Juno 14. The propriety of golfing on Sundays was discussed briefly at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last evening. Tho subject was brought up by a member who moved as follows: "That the Christchurch Golf Club be requested to discontinue Sunday golf-playing." Ho said that tho practice of playing at Shirley on Sundays caused annoyance to a number of people- and the club should bo asked to stop it. If the club refused to comply witli the request the council might have to fight them on the matter. Other members approved of the motion which was carried. The resolution in reference to golfing on Sundays nt Shirley came rather as a surprise to Christclrurch devotees of the game. The prevailing sentiment was voiced to a reporter by a prominent player, who said golf was played on Sundays on many New Zealand links and also in England and oilier countries. As a matter of fact a great many men could not get an opportunity of playing on any other day. There would probably be as mam r as a hundred players on the links on a Sunday and many others attended to watch the games. As far as annoyance to the public was concerned, he could only say that tho people who passed by the links seemed to take u great deal of interest in tho play and frequently stopped to observe players at the game. The game was not in any way a "gallery" one. There were no crowds and noisy demonstrations. It was a recognised "Sunday game" all over tho world and it seemed rather late in the day to object to it. The game was played on the club's own grounds and gave many men tho only chance they had of recreation during the week.
