IMPERIAL INSPECTION.
SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE DOMINIONS. DEBATE IN THE LORDS. (Kec. June 14, 10.30 p.m.) London, Juno 14. In the House of Lords, Lords Hidieton (formerly Unionist Secretary for War), Cromer, and Gronfell (LieutenantGeneral, lately commanding tho Forces in Ireland) ridiculed the post of High Commissioner of the Mediterranean, and declared that the existing officers were ample for the work. Lord Lucas, Under-Secretary for War, replying, said that the benefits resulting from Lord Kitchener's visit to Australia and Jiew Zealand, and the visit of General Sir John French (InspectorGeneral) to Canada, proved the desirability that an officer of high rank and distinguished service should systematically visit the Dominions and inspect their forces. It was impossible to speak definitely at the moment, but useful results would bo produced if the next Colonial Conference agreed to thus utilise the services of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean. Answering Lord Lansdowne (Unionist Leader), Lord Crewe (Government Leader in the Lords) explained that it was for the Dominions to say whether they would join in the proposed plan of Imperial inspection.
